SSO Integration Testing Workflow

Test login, logout, session expiry, role mapping, and error paths against the real IdP in a controlled environment before enabling for production users.

Objective

Validate an SSO integration across success and failure paths before production rollout.

Environment

  • A test IdP tenant or sandbox
  • Test users covering multiple roles

Steps

1. Test the happy-path login with several

Test the happy-path login with several roles.

Expected state: Authentication and role mapping work.

2. Test logout, session expiry, and token

Test logout, session expiry, and token refresh behavior.

Expected state: Session lifecycle is correct.

3. Test error paths: expired certificate, wrong

Test error paths: expired certificate, wrong audience, missing claims.

Expected state: Failures are handled gracefully.

4. Test provisioning and deprovisioning if SCIM

Test provisioning and deprovisioning if SCIM is used.

Expected state: Access changes propagate.

Decision points

Test with a mock or the real IdP?

  • Real IdP sandbox
  • Mock only

Real sandbox for protocol and certificate behavior; mocks miss IdP-specific claim formats.

How much failure testing?

  • Full matrix
  • Happy path only

Full matrix for federated auth; misconfiguration is the most common SSO failure mode.

Expected outcome

A documented test matrix showing login, logout, expiry, role mapping, and failure handling all behave correctly with the IdP.

Verification

Confirm each matrix row was executed against the real IdP and that failures produce clear errors rather than broken sessions.

Cleanup

Archive the test matrix and file any IdP-side issues with the provider.

Decision points

  • Test with a mock or the real IdP? Options: Real IdP sandbox; Mock only. Recommended: Real sandbox for protocol and certificate behavior; mocks miss IdP-specific claim formats.
  • How much failure testing? Options: Full matrix; Happy path only. Recommended: Full matrix for federated auth; misconfiguration is the most common SSO failure mode.
