Service Mesh Adoption Workflow

Adopt a service mesh for traffic management, mutual TLS, and observability across microservices without code changes.

advanced~120 minservice-meshkubernetesworkflow

Objective

Add a service mesh to manage inter-service communication securely.

Environment

  • A Kubernetes cluster with multiple microservices
  • A service mesh
  • Sufficient cluster resources for mesh sidecars

Steps

1. Install the mesh

Install the service mesh control plane on the cluster.

Expected state: The service mesh control plane is running.

2. Enroll services

Add service mesh sidecars to each microservice via namespace or pod annotation.

Expected state: All services have mesh sidecars injected.

3. Enable mTLS

Configure mutual TLS for all inter-service communication.

Expected state: All inter-service traffic is encrypted with mTLS.

4. Add traffic rules

Configure traffic splitting, retries, and circuit breakers via mesh policies.

Expected state: Traffic management rules are applied through the mesh.

5. Verify observability

Check that the mesh provides distributed tracing and metrics out of the box.

Expected state: Distributed traces and metrics are available from the mesh.

Decision points

Istio or Linkerd?

  • Istio for features
  • Linkerd for simplicity

Use Linkerd for simplicity and performance; Istio for advanced traffic management features.

Expected outcome

A service mesh is adopted with mTLS, traffic management, and observability across all services.

Verification

Verify mTLS is active by inspecting traffic; confirm mesh metrics and traces are visible.

Cleanup

Remove the mesh if it causes performance issues; test application functionality without the mesh first.

The mesh handles cross-cutting concerns

A service mesh moves security, traffic management, and observability out of application code and into the infrastructure.

Implementation Notes

This workflow provides a structured approach to ensure consistent results across team members and environments.

Common Pitfalls

Skipping verification steps or rushing through the process can lead to incomplete results. Always follow each step in order and verify before proceeding.
