Readme Bootstrap Workflow
Create a minimal README with project name, setup instructions, and usage examples for a new repository.
Objective
Provide enough documentation for a new contributor to clone and run the project within 10 minutes.
Environment
- A new Git repository
- A project with a defined build and run process
- A text editor
Steps
1. Create README.md
Create a README.md file with the project name as the top-level heading.
Expected state: A README.md file exists with the project title.
2. Add setup section
Document the clone, install, and run commands needed to start the project.
Expected state: A setup section with copy-paste commands is present.
3. Add usage section
Add a usage section with at least one example command or code snippet.
Expected state: A usage example demonstrates how to use the project.
4. Verify by following
Follow the README from scratch in a clean environment to verify accuracy.
Expected state: A new contributor can run the project by following the README.
Decision points
Should the README include architecture diagrams?
- Yes, add a simple diagram
- No, keep it minimal
Include a high-level diagram only if the project has more than two components; otherwise link to a separate ARCHITECTURE.md.
Expected outcome
A new contributor can clone the repository and have the project running by following the README alone.
Verification
Ask someone unfamiliar with the project to follow the README and confirm they can run it successfully.
Cleanup
No cleanup needed.
A good README answers three questions
What is this? How do I set it up? How do I use it? If the README answers these, it is good enough to start.
# My Project
A short description.
## Setup
```bash
git clone <repo>
cd my-project
npm install
npm start
## Implementation Notes
This workflow provides a structured approach to ensure consistent results across team members and environments.
## Common Pitfalls
Skipping verification steps or rushing through the process can lead to incomplete results. Always follow each step in order and verify before proceeding.
