Cache Hit Optimization Workflow
Raise cache hit ratio by analysing misses and fixing key design, TTL, and invalidation problems.
Objective
Improve cache hit ratio to reduce load and latency on origin systems.
Environment
- Cache hit ratio metrics
- Cache key definitions
- Origin load data
Steps
1. Measure the hit ratio
Track hit ratio by endpoint or key group to find where caching underperforms.
Expected state: Low-hit areas are identified.
2. Analyse miss reasons
Classify misses as cold, evicted, invalidated, or key mismatch.
Expected state: The dominant miss cause is known.
3. Fix the cause
Adjust TTLs, normalise keys, or reduce needless invalidation.
Expected state: The fix targets the real miss cause.
4. Verify the ratio rises
Re-measure hit ratio and origin load after the change.
Expected state: Hit ratio rises and origin load falls.
Decision points
Longer TTL or better keys?
- Fix key correctness first
- Just extend TTL
Fix key design first; a long TTL on a wrong key serves stale data.
Cache more aggressively or selectively?
- Selectively cache valuable keys
- Cache everything longer
Cache selectively; indiscriminate caching raises miss cost and memory.
Expected outcome
Cache hit ratio improves by fixing the actual causes of misses, reducing origin load and latency.
Verification
Confirm hit ratio rises for the targeted keys and origin load drops correspondingly.
Cleanup
Document the key design and TTL policy and monitor for regressions.
Overview
Improve cache hit ratio to reduce load and latency on origin systems.
This workflow is reusable across teams and environments; adapt the commands to your tooling while keeping the sequence and checkpoints intact.

# hit ratio by endpoint
cache_stats --group-by endpoint --metric hit_ratio
Verification
Confirm hit ratio rises for the targeted keys and origin load drops correspondingly.
Decision points
Longer TTL or better keys?
- Fix key correctness first
- Just extend TTL
Recommendation: Fix key design first; a long TTL on a wrong key serves stale data.
Cache more aggressively or selectively?
- Selectively cache valuable keys
- Cache everything longer
Recommendation: Cache selectively; indiscriminate caching raises miss cost and memory.
Common failures
- Extending TTL on wrong keys serves stale data.
- Random invalidation kills the hit ratio.
- Unanalysed misses cannot be fixed.
