Multi Region Failover Implementation Workflow

Implement multi-region failover with DNS routing, data replication, and automated health-based traffic switching.

advanced~180 minfailovermulti-regionworkflow

Objective

Set up automated failover across regions for high availability.

Environment

  • Infrastructure in at least two regions
  • A DNS provider with health-check-based routing
  • A data replication strategy

Steps

1. Set up replication

Configure database replication between primary and secondary regions.

Expected state: Data is replicated from the primary to the secondary region.

2. Configure DNS routing

Set up DNS health checks and routing rules to direct traffic to the healthy region.

Expected state: DNS routes traffic based on regional health checks.

3. Implement failover logic

Create automation to promote the secondary region when the primary fails.

Expected state: Automated failover logic is implemented and tested.

4. Test failover

Simulate a primary region failure and verify traffic switches to the secondary.

Expected state: Traffic automatically switches to the secondary region.

5. Test failback

Restore the primary region and verify traffic returns to normal.

Expected state: Traffic returns to the primary after recovery.

Decision points

Sync or async replication?

  • Sync for zero RPO
  • Async for performance

Use sync replication for critical data with zero RPO; async for lower RPO with better performance.

Expected outcome

Multi-region failover is implemented and tested with automated traffic switching.

Verification

Simulate a region failure and confirm traffic switches within the target RTO; verify data consistency after failover.

Cleanup

Fail back to the primary region after testing; clean up any test artifacts.

Multi-region is the ultimate HA

A single region will eventually fail. Multi-region failover with automated switching is the strongest availability guarantee.

Implementation Notes

This workflow provides a structured approach to ensure consistent results across team members and environments.

Common Pitfalls

Skipping verification steps or rushing through the process can lead to incomplete results. Always follow each step in order and verify before proceeding.
