Error Boundary Add Workflow

Add error boundaries to a React application to catch render errors and show fallback UI instead of a blank screen.

intermediate~30 minreacterror-boundaryworkflow

Objective

Prevent unhandled render errors from breaking the entire application.

Environment

  • A React application with multiple components
  • React 16 or later for error boundary support
  • A fallback UI component for error states

Steps

1. Create boundary component

Implement an ErrorBoundary class component with componentDidCatch and a fallback render.

Expected state: An error boundary component is created.

2. Wrap critical sections

Place error boundaries around major application sections to isolate failures.

Expected state: Error boundaries wrap route-level components.

3. Add error logging

Implement error logging in componentDidCatch to report errors to the monitoring service.

Expected state: Render errors are logged to the monitoring service.

4. Test error handling

Throw an error in a wrapped component and verify the fallback UI is shown.

Expected state: The error boundary displays fallback UI instead of a blank screen.

Decision points

One boundary or many?

  • One at the app root
  • Many around sections

Use multiple boundaries around major sections to isolate failures and keep the rest of the app functional.

Expected outcome

Unhandled render errors are caught and displayed with a fallback UI, and errors are logged for debugging.

Verification

Throw an error in a wrapped component and confirm the fallback UI appears; check the monitoring service for the error report.

Cleanup

Remove test error throws after verifying the boundary works.

Graceful degradation

Error boundaries turn a full white screen into a recoverable error state, keeping users engaged instead of confused.

Implementation Notes

This workflow provides a structured approach to ensure consistent results across team members and environments.

Common Pitfalls

Skipping verification steps or rushing through the process can lead to incomplete results. Always follow each step in order and verify before proceeding.
