Chaos Engineering Run Workflow

Design and run a chaos experiment to validate system resilience by injecting controlled failures in production.

advanced~120 minchaosresilienceworkflow

Objective

Validate system resilience by running controlled chaos experiments.

Environment

  • A system with resilience mechanisms
  • A chaos engineering platform
  • A hypothesis about system behavior under failure

Steps

1. Define hypothesis

State a testable hypothesis about how the system should behave during a failure.

Expected state: A clear hypothesis is documented.

2. Choose blast radius

Select the scope of the experiment to minimize risk while testing the hypothesis.

Expected state: The experiment scope is limited to a safe blast radius.

3. Prepare rollback

Ensure the experiment can be aborted and the system restored to normal.

Expected state: A rollback plan is ready before starting the experiment.

4. Run experiment

Inject the planned failure and observe the system response.

Expected state: The failure is injected and the system response is monitored.

5. Analyze results

Compare observed behavior against the hypothesis and document findings.

Expected state: The hypothesis is confirmed or refuted with evidence.

Decision points

Run in production or staging?

  • Production for real validation
  • Staging for safety

Start in staging; move to production once the team is comfortable with the process.

Expected outcome

A chaos experiment is run safely, and the system resilience hypothesis is validated or refuted.

Verification

Confirm the system maintained availability during the experiment; verify all services recovered after the experiment.

Cleanup

Abort the experiment immediately if unexpected failures occur; restore normal operation.

Chaos finds weakness safely

Chaos engineering proactively discovers weaknesses by breaking things in a controlled way before users do it for us.

Implementation Notes

This workflow provides a structured approach to ensure consistent results across team members and environments.

Common Pitfalls

Skipping verification steps or rushing through the process can lead to incomplete results. Always follow each step in order and verify before proceeding.
