Bot Mitigation Tuning Workflow

Baseline legitimate traffic, tune detection rules against real data, measure false positives, and escalate responses gradually instead of blocking broadly.

intermediate~120 minsecurityanti-abuseoperations

Objective

Tune bot mitigation so it stops abuse without harming legitimate users and business partners.

Environment

  • A bot detection or WAF signal source
  • Traffic logs with outcome labels

Steps

1. Baseline normal traffic patterns per endpoint

Baseline normal traffic patterns per endpoint and client type.

Expected state: You know what legitimate looks like.

2. Tune rules and thresholds against labeled

Tune rules and thresholds against labeled attack samples.

Expected state: Rules catch real abuse.

3. Measure the false-positive rate on legitimate

Measure the false-positive rate on legitimate traffic.

Expected state: Legitimate users are not harmed.

4. Escalate responses gradually from challenge

Escalate responses gradually from challenge to block.

Expected state: Mitigation is proportionate.

Decision points

Block on low confidence or challenge?

  • Challenge
  • Block

Challenge low and medium confidence; block only high confidence with a review path.

Tune globally or per endpoint?

  • Per endpoint
  • Global rules

Per endpoint; a login endpoint and an API endpoint have very different legitimate patterns.

Expected outcome

Detection configured from real traffic with a measured low false-positive rate and a graduated response ladder.

Verification

Confirm the false-positive rate is within target and that a challenge, not a block, is the default response for medium-confidence signals.

Cleanup

Document rule versions and revert any rule that exceeds the false-positive budget.

Verification

  • Detection configured from real traffic with a measured low false-positive rate and a graduated response ladder.

Decision points

  • Block on low confidence or challenge? Options: Challenge; Block. Recommended: Challenge low and medium confidence; block only high confidence with a review path.
  • Tune globally or per endpoint? Options: Per endpoint; Global rules. Recommended: Per endpoint; a login endpoint and an API endpoint have very different legitimate patterns.
