CSV — column count mismatch on parse

CSV parser throws a column count mismatch because a row has more or fewer fields than the header, often from unquoted commas or missing trailing delimiters.

beginnerdebuggingcsvparsing

Symptoms

  • error: Row 5 has 4 fields, expected 5
  • Parse succeeds for some rows but fails for others
  • A field contains a comma that is not quoted

Possible causes

  • A field contains an unquoted comma or newline
  • A row is missing a trailing empty field
  • The CSV uses a different delimiter than the parser expects

Diagnosis steps

Inspect the failing row

sed -n "5p" data.csv

Interpretation

Check for unquoted commas or missing fields.

Count fields per row

awk -F"," "{print NR, NF}" data.csv | sort -k2 -n | uniq -f1

Interpretation

Rows with different field counts are the problem.

Root cause

A CSV row has a different number of fields than the header row, so the parser cannot map values to columns and rejects the row.

Fix

Quote fields that contain commas or newlines, add missing trailing delimiters, or configure the parser to skip or pad inconsistent rows.

Verify the fix

Parse the CSV and confirm all rows have the expected column count; verify the data maps correctly to the schema.

Symptom walkthrough

CSV parser throws a column count mismatch because a row has more or fewer fields than the header, often from unquoted commas or missing trailing delimiters. The error appears in production but may not surface in local development because the conditions that trigger it depend on the deployment environment or runtime configuration. Understanding the full symptom set helps distinguish this issue from similar errors.

Diagnosis in practice

Follow the diagnosis steps in the frontmatter to isolate the cause. Each step includes a command and an interpretation of the output. The goal is to narrow down whether the issue is in the configuration, the runtime, or the application code. Reproduce the error in a minimal setup before applying a fix.

Root cause

A CSV row has a different number of fields than the header row, so the parser cannot map values to columns and rejects the row.

Fix

Quote fields that contain commas or newlines, add missing trailing delimiters, or configure the parser to skip or pad inconsistent rows. After applying the fix, monitor the system to confirm the error does not recur under load or in different environments.

Verification

Parse the CSV and confirm all rows have the expected column count; verify the data maps correctly to the schema. If the verification passes, the fix is confirmed; if not, re-examine the diagnosis steps for missed contributing factors.

Diagnostic commands

Run these commands to reproduce and diagnose the issue:

sed -n "5p" data.csv
awk -F"," "{print NR, NF}" data.csv | sort -k2 -n | uniq -f1
